Our ESG priorities

When we launched  Spirit of Progress in 2020, we set out a series of ambitious priority targets. Now we’re a few years into our journey we have taken stock, reflected on our excellent progress to date, and refreshed our focus for the critical years ahead. Our performance targets focus on where we believe we have the greatest control to drive positive change at scale across positive drinking, inclusion and diversity and grain-to-glass sustainability.

Promote Positive Drinking
Promote positive drinking

Our ambition is to change the way people drink for the better, by engaging, educating and empowering consumers to make informed choices about drinking. Our targets are targeted at areas we believe we can have the biggest reach and impact:

  • Contribute towards Diageo India’s target of educating young people, parents and teachers on the dangers of underage drinking, through our ‘Act Smart India’ programme.
  • Contribute towards Diageo India’s Global Target to promote changes in attitudes to drink driving
Champion Inclusion Diversity
Champion inclusion and diversity

Our ambition is to create the most inclusive and diverse environment that ensures all our people thrive, supported by market leading policies and practices; whilst also removing barriers and having a positive impact on our partners, suppliers and communities. We focus our momentum on the areas where we can have the biggest reach and impact, our targets are:

  • Equip 13,000 people with business and hospitality skills, to enhance their employability and livelihoods.
  • Increase total women representation in the company to 33%, and in the leadership team to 50%, by 2025.
  • Ensure 50% of the beneficiaries of our community programmes are women, with a focus on enhancing diversity and inclusion of underrepresented groups.
Pioneer Grain to Glass
Pioneer grain-to-glass sustainability

Our ambition is to build a resilient supply chain that helps our communities adapt to climate change, protects our license to operate, and benefits the bottom line of our business.

Water stewardship has been a longstanding priority for us and we are focused on preserving this critical resource, particularly in water stressed areas. Our targets across water are:

  • Reduce water use in our operations, with a 40% improvement in water use efficiency in water stressed areas and a 30% improvement across the company.
  • Replenish more water than we use in our direct operations in water-stressed areas.
  • Engage in collective action in priority water basins, to improve water accessibility, availability and quality, and contribute to net positive water impact.
  • Invest in improving access to clean water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) in communities near our sites.

The planet needs significant science-based action to create a sustainable low-carbon future and to mitigate the risk from climate change. Our targets are:

  • Reducing our scope 1 and 2 emissions by 50% by 2030, reaching net zero in our direct operations by 2040.
  • Reducing our scope 3 emissions by 26% by 2030 and achieving net zero across scopes 1, 2 and 3 by 2050.
  • Achieve ‘Zero Waste’ created intended for landfill in our direct operations.
  • Ensure 100% of our packaging is recyclable (or reusable/ compostable).
  • Increasing the percentage of recycled content in our packaging to 50% by 2030.
  • Increase the average recycled content in our plastic bottles to 35% by 2025, then deliver sequential improvement by 2030, where the quality and availability meets our needs.
  • Implement regenerative agriculture programmes by 2030.
  • Provide agricultural skills and resources through regenerative agriculture and other programmes to strengthen the resilience and economic prosperity of smallholder farmers in our most important ingredient-sourcing landscapes.
