From Aspirations to Innovation: Kuldeep Agrawal's Journey at Diageo India

A Turning Point in Life
Kuldeep’s academic journey began at GB Pant University in Uttarakhand, marking his first experience away from home. He started his professional career at a FMCG major but left after three months, feeling unfulfilled.
“I felt stuck and didn’t want to have any regrets later,” he reflects.
This decision marked a turning point just before an accident confined him to bed for a few months. He recalls,
“During that time, I found a renewed purpose—one that would make me get up every day and celebrate life, no matter the challenges.”
In 2001, Kuldeep embarked on his Ph.D., completing it in just three years—a remarkable achievement that led to numerous opportunities in academia and beyond. He contributed to various government boards, including the National Dairy Board, and even established a Centre of Food Technology at the University of Allahabad.
Embracing Change at Diageo India
In 2012, seeking new challenges, Kuldeep joined Diageo India as a product developer. He quickly recognised the importance of understanding consumer needs.
“You must keep walking with your consumers, understanding their desires. It’s the biggest note to look for no matter which industry you are in,” he emphasises.
Today, Kuldeep leads a team of 11 liquid scientists focused on innovation and crafting of the liquids and rollout in the factory. His team is behind some of the most celebrated spirits on the market, aligning with Diageo’s commitment to celebrate life every day, everywhere.
“We’re the ones who ensure there’s always something new on the shelf to bring people together,” he proudly states.
Crafting Excellence: The Godawan Legacy
Among the many projects Kuldeep has spearheaded, the Godawan series stands out. It represents a meticulous journey of experimentation culminating in India’s one of the highest-priced single malt.
“We did around 40-50 experiments to arrive at the best. It’s all about keeping the spirit of excellence alive and celebrating each breakthrough,” he recalls.
2024 is shaping up to be a golden year for Kuldeep’s team with multiple new products launched including Godawan Taj and McDowell’s X Series. He sees each creation as a labour of love that arenow being savoured by customers across the country.
“When you put in passion and keep walking through the process, you’re bound to create something remarkable.”
A Culture of Experimentation
Reflecting on his journey, Kuldeep credits Diageo India’s culture for fostering creativity and ownership.
“Here you're encouraged to celebrate ambiguity. Trust your gut and keep walking towards excellence,” he advises his team.
This freedom fuels his passion and keeps each day at Diageo India exciting and full of possibility. The industry has evolved significantly,

His team oversees six distilleries from Bangalore Innovation Centre—Diageo India's nerve centre of creativity.
Balancing Personal and Professional Life
Outside work, Kuldeep embraces balance by enjoying daily walks of 7-8 kilometres with his family.
"I believe in moderation whether it's alcohol or food—it’s part of celebrating life every day," he explains.
